As the general population ages, treating sun damage and precancerous lesions (actinic keratosis) with lasers is growing in demand. Several aspects can be addressed at one time, including freckles and uneven pigmentation, acne scars, wrinkles and fine lines.

Levulan Treatments at Fox Valley Plastic Surgery
Levulan Photodynamic Therapy can prevent the development of skin cancer by effectively treating sun damage and pre-cancerous lesions of the skin. Additional benefits include the combating the bacteria that cause inflammation, unclogging pores, and disabling the skin's sebaceous glands.
Levulan Photodynamic Therapy (LPT) has been approved by the FDA since 1999 for the treatment of sun damaged skin, removing precancerous skin lesions and improving fine lines, pores and skin texture.
Levulan treatments involve the application to the skin of the photosensitizing agent, Levulan, a 20% aminolevulinic acid (ALA). After a three hour absorption period, the Levulan is activated with a blue-light, resulting in significant improvement in the skin. After treatment, the skin will be extremely red and slightly swollen for 3 to 7 days. Any sun exposure in this time can lead to severe burning and blistering and is prohibited. After about 48 to 72 hours, the top layer of your skin will scale, flake, and peel, revealing new and improved skin below.
