IV Hydration Therapy

Did you know that 31% of Americans have at least one vitamin deficiency? IV Hydration is a delivery method for vitamin fluids and medication administered through the veins. The fluid that contains these vitamins and minerals in a “cocktail” are given intravenously via an IV drip, which allows the infusion to move quickly through your bloodstream. Many health-conscious people enjoy IV Hydration as a way of getting the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and even medications they need to feel better in their day-to-day activities.

Does IV Hydration Therapy Work?

When you take a vitamin orally, it passes through your digestive system and gets broken down, which lowers the amount of vitamins your body can absorb (about 50%). This is because several factors affect our body’s ability to absorb nutrients in the stomach including age, metabolism, health status, genetics and more.

With IV Hydration, the vitamins are instantly bio-available, so your body can absorb a much higher percentage (about 90%) of what it needs before passing the rest to your kidneys to be eliminated in your urine.

Common uses of IV Hydration include treating:

  • Nausea: from hangovers, motion sickness, vomiting and dehydration
  • Cold and flu: reduce symptoms like body aches, nausea, vomiting and immune deficiency
  • Illness symptoms: can alleviate pain and symptoms of long-term conditions such as cancer
  • Vitamin deficiency: can quickly restore vitamins the body is lacking
  • Overall wellness: supports general nutrient health, hydration, and better mood, sleep and energy levels

Who Is or Is not a Good Candidate for IV Hydration?

Most adults are candidates for IV Hydration. Many people use IV Hydration therapy for quick rehydration after an intense workout or sporting event. Popular reasons for IV Hydration treatment are to relieve stress, rid your body of toxins, balance hormones, boost immunity and to make your skin healthier.

The following people are not ideal candidates for supplemental IV Hydration:

  • Anyone who has been hospitalized or under the care of a physician in the past month.
  • Anyone with a medical history of :
    • Congestive heart failure
    • Liver disease
    • Kidney disease or renal insufficiency
    • Certain Bleeding disorders
    • Possibly someone taking or using any type of steroid.
    • Someone who is pregnant.

With advance notice we can give you an IV Hydration during some Medispa treatments if scheduling allows. What a great way to maximize your use of time!

FAQ’s

What are the risks of IV Hydration? The potential risks of IV Hydration therapy include, but are not limited to:

  • Occasionally: Discomfort, bruising and pain at the injection site.
  • Rarely: Inflammation of the vein used for injection, phlebitis, metabolic disturbances, and injury.
  • Extremely rarely: Severe allergic reaction, anaphylaxis, infection, cardiac arrest, and death.

How often do I need IV Hydration? Prior to receiving IV Hydration at FVPS, we will have you fill out a screening questionnaire. This will not only determine if you are a candidate, but also provide information to help our providers craft a treatment plan custom to your needs and goals. The frequency that our patients receive IV Therapy ranges from an as-needed basis to weekly, depending on the extent of known vitamin deficiency.

What does IV Hydration feel like? IV Hydration is a comfortable process for our patients. You will be relaxing in a chair in a private room with a TV for the infusion. Feel free to pass the time on your personal mobile phone or iPad. You will feel a small prick when the needle is inserted, but that is the extent of any pain. There are not any uncomfortable sensations during IV Hydration.

What are the side effects of IV Hydration? There are no real side effects from IV Hydration aside from the very small chance of a rare reaction to the medications/vitamins. Your intake questionnaire that you fill out prior to having IV Hydration will assess this risk based on allergies and heart and renal disease. Excessive alcohol intake after an IV hydration can result in stomach irritation and other complications, and can lead to alcohol poisoning and other serious medical problems.
