UNDERSTANDING YOUR CONCERN

Why Have a Painful Skin Lump Evaluated?

A skin abscess is a collection of pus within or beneath the skin, usually caused by a bacterial infection. It may feel tender or warm and can appear as a swollen lump. Redness may be less noticeable on darker skin. Some abscesses drain on their own, but this does not necessarily mean the infection has resolved.

An examination helps distinguish an abscess from an inflamed cyst or another skin growth. Tell your provider how long it has been present and whether it is growing, draining or becoming more painful.

Reasons to arrange a visit

  • A painful or enlarging skin lump
  • Warmth, swelling or drainage
  • A lump that keeps returning
  • A skin concern whose diagnosis is uncertain

YOUR TREATMENT PLAN

Treatment Depends on the Findings

Your provider will determine whether drainage, medication or another approach is appropriate.

When an abscess needs drainage, the provider makes an opening to release the pus. The area is numbed when appropriate, and a dressing is applied afterward. The opening is often left open to allow continued drainage; selected wounds may require packing or another dressing approach.

Antibiotics may be prescribed depending on the findings, surrounding infection and your health. They are not a substitute for drainage when drainage is needed. A sample of drainage may be sent for a culture to help identify bacteria and guide treatment.

When to seek urgent care: A painful, hot lump, fever, chills or spreading redness needs prompt medical attention. If our office cannot evaluate you promptly, seek urgent care. Seek emergency care if you feel seriously ill or symptoms are rapidly worsening.

WHAT HAPPENS AT YOUR VISIT?

1. Evaluate. Review the lump, symptoms, medical history and any prior testing.

2. Discuss. Explain the recommended care, expected healing and costs.

3. Plan. Arrange the procedure or any further evaluation, then review follow-up.

Bring your medication list and any biopsy reports. Tell us about blood thinners, allergies and previous healing problems.

INSURANCE & SELF-PAY OPTIONS

Know your costs before treatment

We accept many insurance plans and offer self-pay options. Your estimate depends on the evaluation, procedure, size and location of the growth, and any laboratory testing.

Medically necessary treatment may be covered, subject to your plan’s terms, deductible, copay and any authorization requirements. Cosmetic removal may not be covered. Verify your provider’s network status with your insurer.

Questions to ask before your procedure

  • Does my plan require prior authorization?
  • What are my insurance and self-pay options?
  • Does the estimate include follow-up?
  • Will laboratory testing be billed separately?

Frequently Asked Questions

Can treatment be performed at my first visit?

Call 920-233-1540 and describe your symptoms. Same-day evaluation or treatment may be possible depending on clinical needs, appointment availability and insurance requirements. Do not delay urgent care while waiting for an office appointment.

Can I squeeze or drain an abscess myself?

Do not squeeze, cut or puncture the lump. Have it evaluated so you can receive advice on the appropriate treatment and wound care.

Will I need antibiotics?

Not everyone needs antibiotics after drainage. The decision depends on your examination, symptoms, health and whether infection extends beyond the abscess.

Is an abscess the same as a cyst?

No. An abscess is a collection of pus; a cyst has a lining and contains other material. A cyst can become inflamed or infected. If a cyst is involved, treating the current infection and removing the cyst later may be separate steps.

Will a sample be sent to a laboratory?

Your provider may recommend a culture of drainage. This differs from pathology examination of removed tissue. Testing depends on the situation, and laboratory charges may be billed separately.

Will drainage leave a scar?

A scar or color change is possible. An incision and the healing process can leave a scar. The abscess itself can also affect the skin. Your provider will discuss wound care and expected healing; scar-free results cannot be guaranteed.

Can an abscess come back?

Yes. Tell your provider if the lump returns or if you have repeated abscesses. Recurrent problems may need further evaluation rather than repeated drainage alone.

Where will my appointment take place?

Confirm the location with our scheduling team. Fox Valley Plastic Surgery has offices in Oshkosh and Appleton; availability depends on the service and provider.
