At the initial visit, a patient fills out a complete medical history and a symptoms questionnaire.  There will be a discussion of the patient’s symptoms and orders given to your main provider for a blood draw to evaluate hormone levels.  When the blood results come back (generally three to five business days later), our office will email the test results to patients.  Once a patient decides to proceed with pellet hormone replacement therapy, FVPS will order the recommended dose, which is shipped to the practice.  All patients must sign a Prescription Shipping Authorization to authorize the pharmacy to send the pellets to the practice.  It takes two weeks for the pellets to arrive.  When the pellets arrive, patients then return for an implantation appointment.

After the implantation, patients can immediately resume normal activities, except for swimming and strenuous exercise, which require a three-day wait.  Patients can expect to feel some improvements within the first two weeks.

Subsequent Appointments

Four to six weeks after the first insertion, patients will come to our office to discuss symptom relief and for another blood test.  At that time, the patient and the practice will decide whether any adjustment needs to be done to the future dosage based on the blood test and symptoms.

Typically, men require an insertion every 5-6 months, and women require an insertion every 3-4 months.  Patients can stop BHRT treatment at any time, which will cause hormone levels to drift back to pre-treatment levels.

Pricing

Evaluation and treatment of hormones is a time consuming process.  In order to keep costs reasonable, Fox Valley Plastic Surgery requires patients to pay the full amount of their treatment at each visit.  Although insurance does not cover BHRT, it may cover the cost of the lab tests. BHRT insertion and the pellets are FSA and HSA eligible.  Patients are responsible for paying for their blood tests at the lab of their choice.

An initial consult fee of $100 is required for inquiry into BHRT. Female patients can expect to pay an average of $2000 per year with a range of $1500-$2900. Male patients pay an annual average of $2000-$2700 because of the larger testosterone doses.

Women are injected with estrogen and a female quantity of testosterone.  Women may come in three to four times a year for the pellet injections.  Because everyone’s needs are different, it is difficult to predict how long the pellets will last.  If the body needs more hormones, it will be used more quickly by the body.

Men are injected with testosterone.  Testosterone pellets for men are larger than the pellets for women, and last longer.  Males typically come in two to three times a year for the pellet injections.
