UNDERSTANDING YOUR CONCERN

Skin cancer care begins with the diagnosis

Skin cancers differ in their behavior and treatment needs. A concerning spot may require a biopsy before a treatment plan can be made. If you already have a diagnosis, the type of cancer, its location, size and other risk features guide the recommendation. A photograph or a visual impression alone is not a substitute for the necessary testing.

Reasons to arrange a visit

  • A sore or spot that does not heal
  • A lesion that repeatedly crusts or bleeds
  • A changing growth or a concerning biopsy result
  • Questions about removal, closure or the next step in care

YOUR TREATMENT PLAN

Complete treatment is the priority

Surgical excision removes a skin cancer along with an appropriate margin of surrounding tissue. Pathology examines the specimen and can assess whether cancer is present at the edges. Some cancers need additional treatment or a specialized approach. We discuss the recommended care rather than treating every diagnosis the same way.

Skin cancer treatment should not be delayed for cosmetic procedures. A suspicious lesion needs evaluation before any another treatment is considered in that area.

WHAT HAPPENS AT YOUR VISIT?

1. Evaluate. Review the growth, symptoms, medical history and any prior testing.

2. Discuss. Talk through observation, testing or treatment, expected healing and costs.

3. Plan. Arrange the procedure or any further evaluation, then review follow-up.

Bring your medication list and any biopsy reports. Tell us about blood thinners, allergies and previous healing problems.

INSURANCE & SELF-PAY OPTIONS

Know your costs before treatment

We accept many insurance plans and offer self-pay options. Your estimate depends on the evaluation, procedure, size and location of the growth, and any laboratory testing.

Medically necessary treatment may be covered, subject to your plan’s terms, deductible, copay and any authorization requirements. Cosmetic removal may not be covered. Verify your provider’s network status with your insurer.

Questions to ask before your procedure

  • Does my plan require prior authorization?
  • What are my insurance and self-pay options?
  • Does the estimate include the office visit and follow-up?
  • Will pathology be billed separately?

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if a skin lesion might be cancerous?

Changes in the size, shape, color, or appearance of a mole or skin growth may indicate a need for evaluation. Lesions that bleed, crust, or fail to heal should also be examined by a qualified healthcare professional.

Can skin cancer be removed in the office?

Many skin cancers can be surgically removed in an office setting using local anesthesia. The appropriate treatment depends on the cancer’s type, size, location, and complexity.

Will skin cancer removal leave a scar?

Any surgical removal can result in a scar. Our surgeons use careful surgical techniques and closure methods to minimize scarring whenever possible while prioritizing appropriate cancer treatment.

Will the specimen be sent to pathology?

Cancer at the specimen’s edges may mean further treatment is needed. Your provider will discuss the result and recommended next step.

Do you treat melanoma?

If you have a melanoma diagnosis, call with your biopsy information so the team can determine the appropriate care pathway. Melanoma may require specialist coordination beyond a routine office procedure.

How quickly can I schedule an appointment?

Fox Valley Plastic Surgery offers quick and convenient appointment availability for evaluation of suspicious skin lesions. Contact our office to discuss scheduling options.

Can treatment be performed at my first visit?

Same-day treatment may be possible when it is medically appropriate, sufficient time is available and insurance requirements allow it. Self-pay procedures may also be performed at the first visit when appropriate. An evaluation does not guarantee same-day removal.

Where will my appointment take place?

Confirm the location of your evaluation and any procedure with our scheduling team. Fox Valley Plastic Surgery has offices in Oshkosh and Appleton; availability depends on the service and provider.
