Emsella®

Emsella modelSit and experience the breakthrough treatment for incontinence. It is a comfortable option for men and women of any age who desire a non-invasive solution for urinary incontinence. Due to factors such as the body’s normal aging, childbirth, menopause or obesity, the pelvic floor muscles weaken and insufficiently support the pelvic organs. The factors directly correlate with urinary incontinence. The goal of Emsella treatments is to help men and women reclaim their body and restore quality of life. Over 200 million people worldwide are affected by incontinence. Are you one of them:

  • Do you leak urine when you cough, sneeze or engage in sports activities?
  • Do you need to go to the bathroom often?
  • Have you refrained from intimate life in the last months out of fear of embarrassment of leaking?

If you answered “yes”, you are probably suffering from urinary incontinence.  Emsella is the first device of its kind, and is FDA cleared to treat both men and women for urinary incontinence. One Emsella session is the equivalent of 12,000 Kegels.

Best Candidates

Men and women of any age who are afflicted with levels 0 and 1 stress urinary incontinence are the best candidates. However, the treatment of improving pelvic muscle tone should theoretically help many others in reducing the amount of leaking. This would include many males who have had prostate cancer.

The following conditions exclude a candidate from Emsella:

  • pregnancy
  • cardiac pacemakers
  • implanted defibrillators, implanted neurostimulators
  • electronic implants
  • pulmonary insufficiency
  • metal implants
  • drug pumps
  • hemorrhagic conditions
  • anticoagulation therapy
  • heart disorders
  • malignant tumor
  • fever

This treatment would not improve a bladder or uterine prolapse. Men and women considering treatment for urinary incontinence should speak to their doctor first about the potential and known benefits and risks of all available treatment options.

How It Works

Emsella utilizes High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology to stimulate deep pelvic floor muscles and restore neuromuscular control. A single Emsella session brings thousands of supramaximal pelvic floor muscle contractions, which are extremely important in muscle re-education of incontinent patients. All this is done without any effort on your part and without getting undressed. Scientific research shows that 95% of treated patients have reported significant improvement in the quality of life. Read more about the study here.

Recovery

Newsletter Sign UpEmsella is a completely non-invasive procedure with no recovery time. Patients remain fully clothed during the treatment. Although there are intense contractions and tingling during the treatment, this is an easy procedure to sit through. There may be some stiffness getting up from the chair after the session, and some mild soreness the next day, but it does not interfere with any activities.

When Results Appear

Most patients see improvement after six sessions, scheduled twice a week. You may observe improvement after a few sessions depending on the severity of your condition. This treatment works best on grades 0-1 level of urinary incontinence. Some patients get worse for a short time before they see improvement. Some patients may need more treatments depending on the severity of their condition. The results vary from person to person, and an exact result cannot be predicted.

Some additional benefits for men using emsella are the:

  • temporary increase of local circulation (THINK BIG),
  • increased sensitivity during intercourse

“Oh my gosh!!! I had a 20 oz. coffee right before I boarded a plane because I thought that I could use the bathroom on the plane. Unfortunately, there was turbulence, so I had to wait 2.5 hours before going to the airport bathroom. On the plane, there was no uncomfortable fullness, no leaking, and no rush to use the bathroom when we landed. Although I only had mild incontinence before Emsella, it seemed that my bladder could barely contain an ounce of fluid. Now I can “hold it” for hours. I was able to get in only 5 Emsella treatments before my trip, but I got results in two weeks. It’s liberating.”  Female Patient 13649, age 59.

Treatment Plan

Emsella Chair modelThe recommended number of treatments is 6. The treatment is 28 minutes per session on the machine, with sessions separated by at least 2 days, depending on your needs. Completing a full treatment series is necessary to maximize treatment efficacy. You may need additional treatments depending on the severity of your condition. Prior to the first treatment, you will take an incontinence survey to determine the severity of your condition. Three months after all the treatments, you will be asked to take the survey again to measure the improvement.

Dress comfortably on the days of treatment so that your legs can be spread open and your back straight so that the pelvis is tilted correctly. It is best to not have any metal on the body. Take off jewelry on your hands. Wear light fabric bottoms so that electromagnetic energy is not hindered. Do not wear jeans or heavy sweats. Avoid bottoms with zippers, or bring light shorts to wear. Take out coins and credit cards in your pockets. Some Lululemon leggings have metallic fibers, so do not wear that brand of legging. All electronic devices such as phones, watches, iPads, and computers must be surrendered, because the electromagnetic energy will harm the devices. Bring a book or magazine to read during the treatment. Patients who are menstruating should not undergo the treatment on that day.

Emsella model smilingThere is typically no pain associated with the treatment and there is no anesthetic required. You will experience gradually increasing tingling and muscle contractions. It will feel more intense as the muscles warm up. The vibrating alternates between fast contractions and deep throbbing, much like a handheld massager. The sensations in the pelvic area are normal and expected, and cause no pain. The intensity level at 100% works best, but it can be lowered if there is discomfort. However, most patients are able to comfortably treated at 100% intensity. You remain fully clothed during the treatment, and may resume normal daily activities immediately after the treatment.

Duration of Results

Questions? Request a Consultation.Depending on the initial severity of the condition, changes may start to revert 6-12 months after the treatment. In the initial studies, patients were still satisfied after 6 months, but we are giving a less optimistic figure for those with more severe incontinence issues. For most, the internal changes can last 9-12 months.  Like all muscles, pelvic muscles start to sag without continued exercise. Aging and gravity are constantly working against the anatomy. It is impossible to get in thousands of Kegels, so maintenance treatments are recommended.  One Emsella treatment is the equivalent of 12,000 Kegels.

Pricing

Although the FDA has approved this treatment for incontinence, insurance still does not cover the cost of Emsella treatments. It is considered an out of pocket expense. However, it is an FSA eligible expense, which can be paid for with pre-tax dollars.

The initial consultation for Emsella® is a non-refundable $100, which can be applied towards the cost of the procedure. Each Emsella treatment costs $200.  A package of 6 treatments is discounted 25% to bring the price down to $150 per treatment or $900 for the package. Once a patient has completed a package of 6 treatments, maintenance packages of 3 treatments are available at 50% off to bring the price to $100 per treatment or $300 for the package.

We recommend that maintenance be performed within one year of the initial completion of 6 treatments. It is always wiser to have a maintenance treatment performed before the pelvic muscles have completely sagged. Otherwise it may take 6 treatments again to get the correction needed.
