With that said, what if there were hope of helping your migraine headaches that went beyond medication? Dr. Marc Serret of Fox Valley Plastic Surgery is now offering surgery for refractory migraine headaches. While this type of migraine headache treatment is new to Wisconsin, it is already globally recognized as a safe and very effective treatment for chronic refractory migraines. In fact, we have patients fly in from across the United States to have their migraine surgeries performed at Fox Valley Plastic Surgery.
Dr. Bahman Guyuron from Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), studied efficacy to demonstrate if migraine suffers were truly helped long-term from migraine surgery and found an 88% positive response from surgery after 5 years. From that response group, nearly one third of patients treated had complete elimination of their migraine headaches, with the remainder having a significant decrease in symptoms (Guyuron et. al. PRS 2011). Dr. Serret was fortunate to train at CWRU, where Dr. Guyuron pioneered migraine surgery, and was able to learn firsthand how it can help people.

Migraine Surgery Defined
What causes migraines? The exact etiology is unknown. Both central and peripheral mechanism theories exist. One theory is that terminal nerve branches are stimulated by surrounding structures such as muscle, vessels, bones and cartilage. The irritation of these end branches can result in a release of biochemical substances that begin an inflammatory cascade of the nerves and membranes around the brain causing symptoms similar to meningitis.*
*Migraine Rationale from Case Western Reserve University Experience
Many migraine patients we help in Wisconsin have been subjected to a host of medicinal and non-surgical therapies. They look to nerve decompression surgery as a way to improve the symptoms they suffer from, including painful headaches, nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound.
Migraine surgery was pioneered by Dr. Bahman Guyuron, president of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons and chairman of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at University Hospitals Case Medical Center. Dr. Guyuron identified 4 common migraine trigger sites (forehead, temple, septum, back of the head).
Migraine surgery is typically outpatient, minimally invasive, and effective. An added benefit is that certain migraine surgery procedures an also offer forehead/brow rejuvenation. Additionally, migraine surgery can be combined with other aesthetic surgical procedures.

"Do it. Absolutely. It is the best money that I ever spent...If you like taking medication and you're okay with it, fine. Deal with your headaches, but if you don't, you don't have to. I don't like taking medication. I don't think it's good for your body. So for me, if I can make the headaches go away pretty much permanently without medication, do it."
- Female patient, age 54
"I received excellent care. Dr. Serret was very thorough in explaining the surgical procedure and listened to my concerns. I think he spent a great deal of time making sure I understood everything and made me feel comfortable with my decision. I've never had a doctor spend as much time with me before a surgical procedure and after 17 years of misery, he has given me hope. I don't know if many people know about this surgery for migraines, but you should do everything you can to publicize it. I know there are other people that would be so grateful for this procedure."
- Female patient, age 66
"Everything about my experience with the ThedaCare Surgery Center was positive. The front desk, nurses, doctors...all were wonderful to me and very easy to deal with. Thank you to all who made my surgery a pleasant experience."
- Female patient, age 57
